A photo can carry more than pixels: capture time, camera and lens details, software records, and GPS coordinates may travel with the original file. Cleaning does not redraw through canvas. JPEGs have EXIF, XMP, IPTC, and comment segments removed; PNGs have text, EXIF, and time chunks removed. Compressed pixel data is not decoded or recompressed. ICC/iCCP color profiles stay by default and are removed only if you choose that option.

What is EXIF?
EXIF is extra data commonly written by cameras and phones into JPEGs, and sometimes PNGs. It can include capture time, camera and lens details, exposure settings, orientation, software, and GPS. It is not part of the visible pixels, but it can be read when the original file is shared.
How can GPS reveal where a photo was taken?
A photo with GPS usually stores latitude and longitude. Putting those coordinates on a map can identify the area around the capture point; the precision depends on what the device recorded. This page uses an amber warning for a photo with location data and offers a plain OpenStreetMap link so you can check it yourself.
How is lossless cleaning different from recompressing a photo?
Recompression decodes pixels and writes a new image with new encoding settings, which can change quality, size, or color. This tool instead removes only JPEG metadata segments or PNG ancillary chunks. The compressed pixel data stays as it was, and display-affecting color profiles are kept by default.
Why check before sharing a photo on WeChat or Weibo?
Platforms, chat apps, and forwarding paths do not all treat metadata the same way, so it is worth checking rather than guessing. If a photo includes time, device, or location records you do not want to share with the original, inspect it here and download a cleaned copy before choosing which file to send.
